Wen Xiang
Age: 22
Nationaity: Chinese (Zhe Jiang, East China)

Wen Xiang comes from a middle-class family in Zhe Jiang province, near Shanghai. He works in a high-tech start-up and has been on several trips to cities near Shanghai. In the summer of 2008 he rode his bicycle nearly 3000km to Kunming, in Southwest China.

Wen Xiang's father is a civil servant in an industrial town, and his mother works as a teacher, so he grew up with a very traditional Chinese education. Wen Xiang grew up in Hu Zhou, a city that has undergone immense growth over the past decade, and has experienced first-hand the economic benefits and the environmental problems that go along with modernization.

Wen Xiang cites his favourite authors as adventure writers Jack London and Hermann Hesse. Check out his blog online (in Chinese) here.

Gesan Duojie
Age: 19
Nationaity: Chinese (Tibetan)

Gesan Duojie comes from a small yak-herding town, 180km from Lhasa. His relatives have herded yaks for generations, rarely visiting Lhasa or coming into contact with Chinese society. More recently however, his father began working with the Chinese in Tibet.

Gesan Duojie himself has grown up near the modern city of Lhasa and brings both traditional and modern Tibetan perspectives to the film. He has never left Tibet, so this trip will open his eyes to the rest of the country he lives in.

The Pre-Production Team

Motorbikes, Mao and a Yak would not be possible without the help of our great production team. Some of the people most involved with the project include:

Larissa Prairie: Larissa is a Brazilian 4th year student at the University of British Columbia majoring with a Political Science degree and a minor in Film Studies. This project is a true combination of her interest in international affairs and her passion for film.

Marina Prado Nogueira: Marina studies at UBC and has a strong interest in the outdoors and adventure. She is directing the fundraising and sponsorship for Motorbikes, Mao and a Yak. Check out her personal blog.

Khan: Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Khan spends his time split between Beijing and Vancouver. He will organize opportunities for Liam, Patrick, Wen Xiang and Tsering to play concerts and various performances in major cities throughout the trip. Khan will be arranging venues in Chengdu, Xian, Beijing, Qingdao and Shanghai.
